Lions Excited About Fish Fry June 10... It's been a year now since the Centerville Lions have tasted a fish sandwich! And they're getting excited about the next Fish Fry on June 10. That's on a Saturday so there will be plenty of workers at the Centerville Christian Church Fellowship Center to help may sure those attending are served well. The dinner this year is only 12 dollars with a ticket... 13 at the door. The menu includes fish or tenderloin sandwich, cole slaw, applesauce, chips, dessert and drink. The fish is being prepared again this year by Dan's. Serving hours are from 11 am to 7 pm. At the dinner meeting Monday evening, May 22, Lions signed up for duties and received a packet of tickets to sell. Proceeds from the Fish Fry help support the club's many projects for the Centerville community throughout the year. 5/22/23 2023 Community Awards Presented... The Centerville Lions Club named three Outstanding Citizens Awards at their annual Community Awards Banquet Monday, May 8th at the high school cafetorium. The Committee introduced each with a biography of their accomplishments and then presented a Lions Club Plaque. Awards were presented to Len Vonderhaar, Greg White and William White of the Wayne County Railroaders Association for restoration of the Centerville Caboose; former school board member Susan Hamilton as outstanding citizenship award for 20 years of service; and Sherri Markley, president of Main Street Centerville for being the Outstanding Citizen of the Year. Committee members were Phil Stevenson, Dennis Stephen, Mike McCoy and Jim Resh. Jeff Jenkins is Lions Club President. The Charter Member Award was given to Dawn Otto, granddaughter of Lions Club Charter member Paul Early. 5/8/23

Centerville Police Chief speaks to the Lions...

Centerville Chief of Police Ed Buchholz, spoke to members of the Centerville Lions Club Monday, Apr. 10th at the Centerville Senior Center. President Jeff Jenkins conducted the meeting. Chief Buchholz has been a citizen of Centerville for 30 years and Chief since 2010. He presently has 6 police officers and 3 reserve officers in the Department. Two new officers are headed to the Police Academy. A graduate of Liberty High School, Chief Ed joined the Air Force and served as a security police officer in the military. Josh Millsaps is the Centerville school recourse officer. Chief Buchholz says their job is to enforce the laws and to keep all of Centerville safe. 4/10/23

Railroaders Night at the Lions... Jeff Millsaps and Greg White of the Railroaders Association Jeff Millsaps and Greg White, both members of the Wayne County Railroaders Association, spoke to the Lions Club Monday evening, March 27th at the Senior Center in Centerville. The Railroaders have restored a large Burlington Caboose and it is now in the Maplewood Park for the public to visit and learn about railroading. The Caboose was built in 1907 in Chicago and came to this area in 1979 with McDonalds restaurants. The Railroaders group obtained it from Reid and worked on restoring it in 2018 at the Kenny Bertsch farm at Milton. It came to Centerville in 2020 and is on display for the public. The Caboose will be open April 8th from 11 to 5 pm and then the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from noon to 5 pm. The group depends on donations to improve the display area and sidewalk bricks are available to purchase. 3/27/23 Lions Hear About Art Program... Art teacher Chris Evrard (r) speaks to Lions Chris Evrard, art instructor and teacher at Centerville High School, spoke to members of the Centerville Lions Club Monday evening March 13. The dinner meeting was held at the Centerville Senior Center. Program Chairperson Holly Stiggleman introduced Mr. Evrard, who displayed several pottery items along with pictures and paintings all completed by students. A graduate of Ball State University , Mr. Evrard has been with the Centerville schools for 17 years. Several art students works will be on exhibit at the Art Show in the Richmond Art Museum beginning in April. They also have 119 Adult Volunteers among 32 active clubs in Wayne County. The 4-H organization was begun in 1902 and is a part of all 92 counties in Indiana. 3/13/23 Lions Hear About 4-H Program...

Alicia Crisswell of the Wayne County Purdue Extension Office spoke to members of the Centerville Lions Club Monday, February 27th at the CentervilleSenior Center. Alicia told of the many programs 4H offers county youth and over 800 members are enrolled this year. Mini 4-H members are grades K-2 and regular 4-H members are grades 3-12. They also have 119 Adult Volunteers among 32 active clubs in Wayne County. The 4-H organization was begun in 1902 and is a part of all 92 counties in Indiana. President Jeff Jenkins conducted the business meeting The Club voted to donate $200 to the Wayne County Genealogical Society. Dennis Stephen presented a treasurer report. The Railroaders Association will present the Lions Club program on March 27th at the Senior Center. Visitors are welcome and new members are invited to attend. 2/28/23

Lions and Friends Enjoy Christmas Banquet with Music...

Lions and friends gathered for their annual Christmas Banquet Monday evening, December 12. They enjoyed a musical program performed by guitarist Layla Pate, a freshman at Centerville High School. Everyone got to introduce themselves. They also played a game and heard about the Twelve Days of Christmas. All received a handmade Christmas Bell ornament made by Lion Wendy Cook. The event was held at the Centerville High School Cafetorium. 12/12/22

District Governor Pays Official Visit... DG Linda Scott with President Jeff Jenkins

Indiana Lions Club 25-F Governor from Indianapolis was welcomed to the dinner meeting of the Centerville Lions Club on Monday, November 28th at the Centerville Senior Center. DG Linda Scott and First Vice DG Edward Harper were both present to bring greetings from over 50 other Lions Clubs in the district. Linda also thanked the Club for its many local projects and donations to the State projects, including Leader Dog School, Cancer Control, LCIF. She encouraged the club to invite new members to join in helping others in the community. District Governor Linda also presented awards to Wendy Cook for 15 years as a member, Ty Farmer for 10 years, and to Jim Howell for 60 years membership.   11/28/22

Lions to Participate in Christmas in Centerville...

William White with the Planning Committee of the Christmas in Centerville celebration spoke to members and guests of the Centerville Lions Club Monday evening October 24th. The regular dinner meeting was held at the Centerville Senior Center. White highlighted the Christmas activites including the annual parade, lighting contest and Santa's visit to the Log cabin. 10/24/22

Lions Hear From Therapist... Jason Rusznak, owner Cutting Edge Therapy Members of the Centerville Lions Club learned about common shoulder pain problems from therapy specialist Jason Rusznak at their regular dinner meeting Monday, Octotber 10th at the Centerville Senior Center. Rusznak explained rehab with rotator cuff pathology and other aging pain that most people experience. He is owner of Cutting Edge Physical Therapy in Richmond. 10/10/22   Lions Fill Candy Bags... Ty Farmer, VP of the Lions Club, who conducted the business meeting in the absence of President Jeff Jenkins, announced the Club will help with the Centerville elementary school Fall Festival on Oct. 13th, providing bags of candy for all students. Members of the club sorted and bagged over 250 treats at the meeting. The Community Halloween Party was canceled due to the Elementary gym being unavailable this year. The club also provided over 130 dictionaries for the Centerville third grade students and they were presented to each student by Lions members Dennis Stephen, Phil Stevenson, Paul and Joe Elstro last week. Holly Stiggleman presented a check for $234.00 to help with the cost of the books. This was provided by the annual Rock a Thon event. 10/10/22 Past President Bevington Expresses Appreciation... President Jeff Jenkins presents award to Scott Bevington Edit Picture After receiving a special award Monday night, September 12 at the Steak Fry, Immediate past president Scott Bevington sent the Centerville Lions Club this message: Friends, I can't tell you how touched I was to receive a service award from you at last night's steak fry. It reads: "Setting the Standard of Lionism." As beautiful a sentiment as that is (and as much as I appreciate it) I really don't feel like it's true. I think it was only a reflection of what I've seen in all of you. Dedication to community, sage leadership, and acts that can only come from the hearts of servants were the examples you all have set for me. Thank you all for your work during my time as President. Most of all, thank you for your friendship. I've been very blessed to be a Centerville Lion. 9/13/22

Centerville Lions and volunteers served the club's 2nd Community Breakfast at the Centerville Senior Center on August 6. Officers of the Centerville Lions Club for 2022-2023 were installed Monday evening, June 13 at the Centerville Senior Center. 25-F District Governor Jeff Locke installed the officers. New officers are: Jeff Jenkins, president; Ty Farmer, 1st vice president and Richard Tincher, 2nd vice president. Others: Dennis Stephen, treasurer; Cyrstal Jenkins, assistant treasurer. Wendy Cook, secretary; Jim Resh, assistant secretary. Tail Twister: Steve Sheckles and assistant Paul Elstro. Lion Tamer: Steve Sheckles and Ty Farmer assistant. Board members: Vickie Chasteen and Phil Stevenson, 2 years; Holly Stiggleman and Anne Elstro, 1 year. Membership chair: Joe Elstro. Public relations: Bill Felker and Jim Resh. The new Lions year begins July 1 and runs for one year ending June 30, 2023. The final event this Lions year is its annual Family Picnic. it will be held this year on Thursday, June 23 at Maplewood Park in conjunction with the dedication of a new plaque and tree in memory of Centerville Lions. It replace a tree that died earlier this year which honored the late Centerville Lion Buff Resh. The event begins at 6:30 pm. 6/13/22

Lion Mark Howell Dies... Centerville Lion Mark A. Howell of Centerville died at his home April 12. He as 65. The son of Lion Jim Howell and wife Marge, he had retired after serving for 25 years as Centerville High School Athletic Director. He is also survived by his wife Cinda Lynn, two sons, and a brother. Services were held April 16 at the Centerville Christian Church where he served as an elder. Burial followed at Crown Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Centerville High School Athletic Department, 507 Willow Grove Road, Centerville, Indiana 47330. 4/17/23 Lions Nominate Officers and Approve a Donation...

Community Awards, Nominations and Election... Lions Club president Jeff Jenkins Lion President Jeff Jenkins received reports from the Community Awards Committee. This year's event will take place on Monday, May 8th at 6 pm at the high school cafeteria. All past honorees will be invited to attend and three Community Awards will be presented. The dinner will begin at 6:30 pm. The Club voted to purchase new Lions Club caps and decided to support Centerville High School Athletics by purchasing $600 of game time commercial runs for all sporting events. Lion Jim Resh displayed a new banner stand just received to hang the club's Lions banner and will be used at each meeting and event. Next meeting of the Lions Club will be Monday, April 10th with nomination of new officers. Marcia Sloan, President of the Wayne County Genealogical Society spoke before members of the Centerville Lions Club Monday, Jan. 23rd at their dinner meeting in the Senior Center. Member Jim Resh introduced Ms Sloan and informed members that she was the 3rd great granddaughter of David Hoover who settled Richmond in 1806. She also edits the Society's newsletter with very interesting stories about Wayne County. Membership Awards Presented at Governor's Night... DG Linda Scott presents 60 year award to Jim Howell

At the November 28 meeting of the Centerville Lions club District Governor Linda presented awards to Wendy Cook for 15 years as a member, Ty Farmer for 10 years, and to Jim Howell for 60 years membership.   Lion Secretary Wendy Cookwith her Christmas baskets Christmas baskets for Christmas in Centerville silent auction made by Wendy Cook. They will be for sale at the Mansion House. The Club voted to donate $200 to the Centerville Police and Fire Dept. for Christmas baskets. Entries are being received for the Christmas in Centerville lighting contest and the Lions Club will judge the lights and also provide prizes. Lions Club will also have a float in the Christmas parade. The Club's annual Christmas banquet will be held on Monday, December 12th at 6 pm at the high school cafetorium with entertainment by Layla Cate, a CHS Freshman. CHS Basketball Coach Expects A Good Year... Jesse Swiderek, Jacob Andrews, Lions VP Ty Farmer, and Head Coach Kodi Smith

Kodi Smith, Head basketball coach for Centerville High School, spoke before members of the Centerville Lions Club at their dinner meeting November 14th in the Centerville Senior Center. Smith is in his second year as coach of the Bulldogs. He has six assistant coaches including Jacob Andrews and Jesse Swiderek who were present at the meeting. Coach Smith expects a good team this season and practice has been improving. A parent/student gathering was held last week and the team photo was taken at that time. The team will meet Eastern Hancock for their first game and Centerville is now in Class 3-A. 11/14/22

Lions Discuss Christmas in Centerville Among Other Items... Lions Club President Jeff Jenkins spoke of Christmas in Centerville which will be held Dec. 3rd. The Lions Club will sponsor and judge the lighting contest which will include Businesses and Homes this year. Several Lions club members will help make Christmas baskets at the Mansion House during the event. The parade begins at 7 pm.

Past Presiddnt Holly Stiggleman, Leo Club sponsor, stated that today, November 14th, was World Diabetes Day and the Leo Club manned a table at school at the noon lunch promoting healthy eating habits. Next meeting of the club will be Monday, Nov. 28th at 6:30 at the Senior Center in Centerville. District Governor Linda Scott will pay an official visit and speak to Lions. 11/14/22

Lions Hear From Town Council President... Dan Wandersee addresses members of the Centerville Lions Club

Centerville Town Council president Dan Wandersee told Centerville Lions Monday evening, September 26, the population of Centerville has risen 9% since 2020. He thanked the club for its support of the police department with new vests. Wandersee added that the police department now has ten police officers... 6 fulltime and 4 reserve. He said the fire station is in need of some updating and are considering needed improvements. And he said a culvert in Maplewood Park will need replacing soon. Wandersee has been a member of Town Council for 27 years. Club President Jeff Jenkins handed out a listing of future meetings and events to members. The club will participate in Christmas in Centerville and just how will be determined in October. And he reminded members the annual Lions Community Halloween Party will be held on Monday evening, October 31 this year. 9/26/22

Autumn Oaks Dog Show...

Eight Centerville Lions along with three Richmond Lions and one from the Williamsburg Club along with another from a veterans groups manned the gates at the Autumn Oaks on Saturday, September 3. The club received one-thousand dollars for manning the ticket gates. 9/6/22

Dedication of Tree Follows Picnic...

The Centerville Lions Club held its annual Family Picnic at Maplewood Park in Centerville Monday evening, June 23. The dedicaation of a tree to the memory of Centerville Lions followed the picnic. The tree, a Cherokee Princess Dogwood, replaces a tree that died recently. It was the Indiana State Tree, a Tulip Poplar. It had been dedicated in 1993 in the memory of Lion Alfred (Buff) William Resh, who died the previous year. A plaque commemorating today's dedication will be placed with the original plaque. Resh had been a member of the club from 1973 until his death in 1992. His son, Lion Jim Resh, was joined by his two sisters at the dedication... Mary Ann Carp of Lovejoy, Georgia and Phyllis Mattheis and husband, Jerry of Cambridge City, Indiana.
